This part of the route is soon after the start, by what is known as the ‘Village Green’ in West Mersea.
Due to congestion at the 2013 event at the ‘Monkey Steps’, and subsequent changes to the pathway here which has made it narrower, for 2014 the race will continue along the beach towards the houseboats, then competitors will be directed along the ‘Board Walk’ towards Coast Road.
We will have marshals positioned at the bottom of Monkey Steps, each end of the ‘Board Walk’ and on Coast Road
The new route is 1810 feet, the old route is 1333 feet
The new route is 159 yards longer, to make up the distance to a full ½ marathon, we will move start 20 yards up beach.
Please also see previous post about route change between Coopers Beach and the Youth Camp which is more involved.
The sea wall path has been closed by Essex County Council between Coopers Beach Holiday Park and The Essex Outdoors Youth Camp, due to severe damage in the recent storms. The path has been undermined by the waves—see below. It will not be repaired in time for this year’s race.
The route to bypass this problem adds another 0.8 miles to the course length, making the total distance ~13 mile
From the water station at the eastern end of Coopers Beach, the route now goes northwards up a wide track (Public footpath No5) and out of the Coopers Beach entrance. Competitors then turn left onto a bridleway (footpath No 4) to Rewsalls farm. They then turn left onto the road and go through the Youth Camp back to the sea wall. From there the route is down the ramp onto the beach, as in previous years. The new route will be signposted and marshalled.
The old route was a good running surface of smooth concrete; the new by-pass route is running on tracks with an uneven surface. To partially compensate for the additional distance, further on, the runners will be directed off the beach just before Seaview Holiday Park beach huts and will now omit the soft sand section in front of the beach huts. Instead the course will go through the holiday park on a hard surface.
We are hoping to have Tori Andrews at both our running races this year. last year she took some excellent pictures of the 5 and 10 mile races. She has also been chosen for one of the official London Marathon photographers.
Her pictures can be seen at: www.toriandrewsphotography.co.uk
Entries are now open and you can now register and pay for our two running races online.
Alternatively you can still submit entry forms with SAE (or e-mail address) as previous years.
It is anticipated that the online registration will be active from 21st December 2013, from this date you will be able to enter and pay for the 2 running events we are hosting in 2014. We still will have the option to accept a mail entry and cheque.
This year, in common with many racing events we have introduced a new on-line registration and payment on-line service. This will simplify the registration procedure for participants and greatly improve the efficiency of our race administration. We would strongly encourage you to take advantage of this new facility.
We hope to have this facility in operation from December 21st
The dates for next years races will be as follows:
Round The Island race: Sunday 22nd June 2014
Five and Ten Mile race: Sunday 24th August 2014
